Despite his struggles, Le’Veon Bell remains the workhorse of the NFL

Pittsburgh Steelers radio personality Matt Williamson dropped a stat on Twitter on Monday that really made us think about Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell. According to Williamson, no running back in the NFL has played more snaps since 2013 than Bell. And this is in spite of numerous suspensions and injuries.

It is easy on the surface of a stat like this to simply praise Bell for putting himself out there so much over the course of the past five seasons. The Steelers’ coaches rarely subbed him out when he was healthy and whether it was a rusher, receiver or blocker he does his job.

But could we look at those numbers as a negative? It’s been pretty obvious that toward the end of the past couple of seasons, Bell hasn’t 100 percent. When Bell went out with the groin injury in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots, the offense sputtered.

However, it was later discovered this injury didn’t happen in that game but earlier and the coaches just kept trotting him out that, making things worse. In that case, him getting all these snaps is a real detriment to the team.

The most interesting thing will be how the Steelers handle his snaps this season. Assuming there is no new contract, this will be Bell’s last season in Pittsburgh. Do you run the wheels right off or do you spread out those snaps, preparing for a future without him?
